We focus on six key areas where we can have a direct and lasting impact on the communities in which we live and work.
A solid education is one of the greatest assets anyone can have, and we at BMT believe one of the most impactful ways we can give back is by aiding schools and educational organizations in a variety of ways:
- Offering the full spectrum of financial services to schools through our BMT Education Advisors team
- EITC, EIO, and BLOC grants, along with pre-K scholarships, totaling $1.56 million in 2019 to schools and educational organizations throughout our market area
- More than 100 of our employees volunteering with public schools, private schools, music schools, and more to help them grow and nurture the young minds who will become business and community leaders in a few short years
- Our Breakfast Seminar Series, through BMT Wealth Management, provides CPE and CLE credits on a number of topics to legal and accounting professionals throughout the year.
- First-time homebuyer seminars held throughout our footprint help people prepare for the joy and responsibility of homeownership
- Our BMT Wealth Management Breakfast Seminar Series and our first-time homebuyer seminars have transitioned to a webcast format during the pandemic.

But what is talking the talk without walking the walk? That is why BMT continues to find ways to serve our clients and team members in ways that make them feel included in the BMT family.
When a customer who speaks a foreign language visits a BMT branch, they may not see one of the best services that will help them take care of their banking needs in their native language. With our Language Line, a customer can be connected to a live translator fluent in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, French, Arabic, or 240+ other languages. That translator, the customer, and the bank employee will all share the line so customer questions can be answered and product explanations can be made in real time.
The BMT Multicultural Advisory Board
This first-of-its-kind initiative among Pennsylvania-based financial institutions was created to advise our company on matters important to the diverse communities we serve. The array of experiences and backgrounds of our advisory board members allows us to operate with increased cultural awareness and sensitivity to better serve our customers and underserved segments within our communities.

Bryn Mawr Trust has been named a Winning ‘W’ Company by 2020 Women on Boards for achieving at least 20% women on its corporate board before the year 2020. Winning ‘W’ Companies are cited in the 2020 Women on Boards (2020WOB) annual Gender Diversity Index which tracks the numbers of corporate board seats held by women among the Russell 3000 Index. As of 2018, the percentage of board seats held by women rose to 17.7%, up from 16.0% in 2017. This upward trend represents good progress, but still, half of the Russell 3000 companies have one or no women on their boards.
BMT has been committed to empowering people to reach their financial goals for well over a century. Whether it’s working with someone to repair their credit, providing a checking account designed for people who’ve had issues in the past, or helping people purchase their home, BMT is committed to empowering people to reach for their dreams without being confined by income, credit score, or past mistakes.
Fresh Start Checking
With Fresh Start Checking, we help those who have a charge-off at another bank rehabilitate their standing, allowing them to have a limited checking account while they work to pay back the charge-off owed to another financial institution. Unlike many financial institutions, we don’t believe a mistake should prevent people from having an account with a mainstream bank or force them to use a check cashing business that could charge them 5% or more just to cash a check.
Neighborhood Opportunity Program
Bryn Mawr Trust, in an effort to promote fair and affordable housing in the communities we serve, offers the Neighborhood Opportunity Program. The program is designed to assist individuals and families with limited income, or who are purchasing in low- and moderate-income areas, realize their dreams of homeownership. For years, this program has been transforming lives and neighborhoods through our belief in the power of homeownership.
First Front Door Program
Our First Front Door program goes beyond the typical first-time homebuyer programs most banks offer. These grants of up to $5,000 use funds available through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh to match $3 for every $1 contributed by the qualified first-time homebuyer. This grant can be used for down payment or closing cost assistance.
No-Minimum-Balance Requirement Checking Account
BMT is among a decreasing number of banks regionally still committed to offering a no-minimum-balance requirement checking account to help individuals, families, and small business with their basic financial management needs.
Health & Wellness
Our BMT Men’s & Women’s Health Initiative brings our employees together in unique ways to spotlight issues which affect many throughout our communities. In October, our employees wear pink to bring awareness to breast cancer. In 2019, we also were proud to make a donation to the Breast Health Initiative at Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center. The following month, more than 30% of our male employees put down their razors for “No Shave November” to raise awareness for men’s health issues (prostate or testicular cancers, mental health, and suicide prevention). In recognition of all our temporarily-unshaven employees, we were pleased to donate to The Movember Foundation.
Throughout the year, we ask our customers, employees, and vendors to join together for blood drives and food drives that directly impact our communities. In 2019, we donated more than 5 gallons of blood and more than 375 pounds of food to local food banks and pantries.
Over 100 days. That is the amount of time in 2019 collectively BMT employees have given back to the communities in which we live and work. To us, it is not enough to be the best financial resource people can turn to for their banking, wealth management, and insurance needs. We truly want to be a good corporate citizen, giving back our time, talent, and treasure.
So our employees have given time to Our Closet. And Baker Industries. And dozens more as well as a Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, schools, churches, homeless shelters, and more.
In addition to donations and volunteering with organizations, the BMT Sweet Treat Ice Cream Truck has supported hundreds of community events with free frozen treats from early spring to late fall. We are so committed to helping as many organizations as we can, we have made it easier for our employees to give their valuable time to even more organizations. Among our employee benefits is something called VTO: Volunteer Time Off. This program allows our employees to donate up to eight hours of their work time per calendar year to volunteer at pre-approved charitable events during normal business hours and be paid for that time.
When we designed this program, we had one goal in mind: create community engagement opportunities for our employees that are meaningful, purposeful, and help those in need. At the same time, BMT recognizes that participating in these activities will also enrich and inspire the lives of our employees. Finally, to help employees give back more than just their time to organizations throughout the community, in 2020 we partnered with Philanthropi, a company who has a platform that allows our employees to donate confidentially to causes they believe in through convenient payroll deductions
BMT is committed to lessening our environmental impact through smarter usage of our natural resources. This includes:
- A stronger emphasis on client adoption of eStatements, which will significantly lessen the amount of paper we consume each month.
- Replacement of paper products with reusable mugs and plates in our staff and guest areas.
- Installation of motion-activated lighting and LED bulbs in our offices, reducing our electricity waste.
- Embracing remote work options, reducing auto emissions.
- Replacing all thermostats with energy-saving models, reducing energy waste.
- Monthly Board meetings and other sizeable presentation decks have become paperless, utilizing technology to reduce waste.
- In remodeled offices, we’ve used carpet made from recycled fibers as well as incorporated energy-efficient appliances, lighting, and climate control.
- Added reflective roofing to three of our properties, including our Bryn Mawr headquarters.
